How to Cut Calories to Lose Weight - September 15th, 2011

Too often, people think that the only way to lose weight is by strapping on the athletic gear and sweating their way to a thinner waistline.

But exercise, while necessary, might not be the best way for you to lose a large amount of weight.

It All Comes Down to Calorie Increase vs. Calorie Decrease

cut calories to lose weightThe old adage, “eat less and exercise more” is repeated so often because it is so true. The fat we store is only stored so that our body can use it as energy for daily activities. If you expend more of that energy during the day, your body’s going to have to start relying on those fat stores.

However, sometimes people can get caught up in thinking that is the only way your body depletes the never-ending stores of fat; when in reality, you only store fat when your body can’t use up all the energy from your food.

It’s Easier to Avoid Calories Than Get Rid of Them

If you think about running 3 or 4 miles, most people would think that’s a fairly decent accomplishment and reward themselves by eating more food or at least a normal amount of food. Unfortunately, running this much can burn as little as 200 calories; 400 at best. This is the equivalent of eating a few chocolate chip cookies.

Don’t misinterpret and think we’re trying to discount exercising. It’s just your body has evolved to burn calories in the most efficient way, leaving more fat for those lean months.

But since our bodies rarely see the lean months, we’ve compiled a few tips to help you cut some calories before they even get into your mouth:

1. Go fat free. Whether it’s milk, cream cheese, sour cream, yogurt, ground beef, etc. choose the kind with the least amount of fat; you’ll barely taste a difference.
2. Use nonstick spray. Rather than slathering your pan in butter, spraying your grease will decrease as many as 100 calories from your meal.
3. Use your spice rack. Spices are almost free of calories, whereas flavorful butter and cheese will only pack on the pounds.
4. More sauce. When you’re eating pasta, take less pasta and more marinara; this will decrease your carb intake while raising your vegetables for the day.
5. Bake better. When you have a hankering for baked goods, replace half the fat with applesauce and you’ll still have a moist product without the fat.
